61 Years. That’s How Long We Had a Shield. The Supreme Court Just Took It.

Sixty-one years. That’s how long Black folks had a legal shield protecting our right to vote and our political power. The Supreme Court just took it away. And if you don’t understand what that means, let me break it down — because most of us won’t understand it until it’s too late.

On April 29, 2026, the Court signed away 61 years of Black political protection. The Voting Rights Act was signed into law in 1965, two years before I was born. My whole life — every single year — that law sat like a shield between us and the people who wanted to erase our political power. Now it’s gone.

I’ve been doing this work for over 25 years. I run campaigns. I advise leaders. I’ve watched how power actually moves in this city and in cities across this country. And I’m telling you straight: this didn’t happen by accident. It was a strategy, and it was calculated. If we don’t understand the game — and start playing it — we’re going to keep losing.

The case is Louisiana v. Callais. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court said Black people could not draw districts that let us elect the people we choose. Read that again. They said protecting Black political power is unconstitutional. They’re saying protecting us is now, in effect, illegal. Let that one sink in.

Here’s what most people miss. They’re not coming for your ballot. Your vote will still count — technically. What they’re taking is the map.

Every ten years, after the census, states redraw the congressional districts. That drawing decides who gets elected. That’s where the real power is. If we’re 40% of a state, we ought to have real influence over 40% of the map — enough to elect people who actually represent us. But they’ve got two moves to lock us out.

The first is packing. They take every Black voter they can find and cram us all into one district. That district gets one Black representative — and every district around it turns majority white. Instead of holding real power in four or five races, we hold it in one. Our strength gets concentrated and contained.

The second is cracking. They take our neighborhoods and slice them across five or six districts, so we stay the minority everywhere. Our votes get cast, but they never add up to enough in any one place to elect somebody who represents who we are.

For 60 years, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was our protection against both. If they drew a map that diluted Black power, we could take it to court, prove it, and force a redraw. That’s exactly what happened in Louisiana — a federal court found the map weakened Black voters and ordered a second district where we could win. The Supreme Court just blew up that rule. Now you have to prove they diluted our power on purpose — that somebody sat in a room and said, “We’re going to hurt Black people.” That’s nearly impossible, and they know it.

So here’s what we do.

Vote smart, and vote every single time. Every election — federal, state, and especially local. School board, judges, prosecutors. Those local seats shape everyday life more than anything in Washington. Your school board decides how your children are taught. Your prosecutor decides who gets locked up in your neighborhood. Your judges decide what justice looks like where you live. They can redraw every map they want. They cannot redraw the turnout — if we show up and vote smart.

Build our own economy. That’s not optional anymore. Look at how some immigrant communities in this country operate — Asian American communities among them. They don’t always lead in voter turnout, but they’ve built real economic protection by practicing collective economics: buying from each other, banking together, investing together, building wealth together. That’s a model, not a knock — and we can do the exact same thing. Support Black-owned businesses. Bank at Black-owned banks. Invest in Black real estate. Build Black wealth on purpose and unapologetically — because when they silence our vote, our dollar has to speak louder than any ballot ever could.

Get in the redistricting fight — right now. This is happening all around the country as we speak. Find out who’s drawing your maps. Go to the meetings. Make noise. Demand to be heard — because that map decides your future.

And understand what this is. This is Project 2025 in action — tearing down the protections that keep us safe, redrawing power so it flows away from us, quieting our communities. We’ve seen it before. Tulsa. Rosewood. Black Wall Street. Every time we build something powerful, they find a way to tear it down. But this time we’ve got the blueprint. We know what’s coming, and we know what to do.

We vote smart. We build wealth. We fight for fair maps. That’s how we protect ourselves.

And in Ohio, this stops being theory. Our map is already locked — a 12-3 map bolted in through 2030 — so the only variable left in November is us. That’s exactly what the ground operation is built for: turning people out across Cuyahoga County in the one cycle where turnout is the whole game. They took the map.
