Who’s Who in Black Cleveland unveils its 18th Edition with a networking reception at the InterContinental Cleveland — nearly two decades of chronicling the Black professionals, executives, and civic leaders who make Northeast Ohio run. Eighteen editions is not a party. It’s an archive of Black power in this region, kept on purpose.
At the center of this year’s honors is Margot James Copeland, who receives the Lifetime Achievement Award. A nationally recognized board leader, retired banking executive, and distinguished civic leader, Copeland’s career runs straight through the institutions that shape a city’s future — financial services, philanthropy, healthcare, higher education, and community development. That’s not a résumé. That’s infrastructure — the kind of quiet, sustained institutional power that keeps opening doors decades after the fact.
The edition’s foreword comes from Vanessa L. Whiting, president of A.E.S. Management Corp. — an attorney, investor, and civic leader in her own right, one more name in a long Cleveland line of Black leadership documenting itself for the record.
Here’s why a night like this belongs in these pages. We spend a lot of ink on what power does wrong. Just as important is naming who’s been building it right — because a community that keeps a record of its own excellence is a community that knows its worth and passes it forward. Who’s Who has kept that record for 18 editions. The least we can do is point you to it.
