The Democratic Party Has Failed Black People in America

Growing up, I believed — or was programmed to believe — that the Democrats wanted the best for my community. It was easy to fall in line, given how openly hostile the Republican Party had been for as long as I could remember. You picked the party that pretended to care over the one that did not bother to pretend.

That is the real problem with a two-party system. When one party is that hostile to Black America, it gives the other one perfect cover to do the bare minimum and still collect our vote, our labor, our loyalty and our silence. I do not care how many Black surrogates get rolled out in October, how many photo-ops happen at a Black church, or how many speeches mention systemic racism. What that party has done, generation after generation, is give us just enough to keep us tethered. Just enough to keep us showing up, and not one inch more.

The latest example is impossible to ignore. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries sat down privately with Jared Kushner to talk about affordability. The New York Times reported it first. Jeffries confirmed it in a video, saying Kushner asked for the meeting and he took it, and insisting no one from what he called the Trump cartel is getting a pass.

It is not just the meeting. It is who they chose to have it with, at this moment, on this subject. And it is always worse when it is one of our own. When the person delivering the disappointment looks like you, it cuts deeper than when a stranger does it. The greatest tool of white supremacy has never been only the man with the bullhorn. It is the Black person in power who has been absorbed into the machine and does not realize he is being used as a shield for it.

Ask yourself why Leader Jeffries would need that meeting at all. If we think it through instead of accepting the press release, we already know. It has nothing to do with anything that materially benefits Black people. It has everything to do with donor relationships, real estate interests, and keeping a certain class of power broker comfortable. So let me say it plainly. The Democratic Party has failed Black people in America. Not underperformed. Not still has work to do. Failed.

Look at the map. The cities where Democrats hold generational, iron-clad control — Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, St. Louis — are the same cities that depend on Black turnout election after election. They are also the cities where poverty runs generational, where over-policing is routine, where school systems are underfunded to the point of collapse, where food deserts stretch for miles and whole blocks sit abandoned. That is not coincidence. That is what one-party dominance without accountability produces.

Somebody will say that is state and local, not the federal party. There is truth in that. But there is always something that can be done federally. Housing policy. Education funding formulas. Infrastructure dollars. Criminal justice reform. The federal government sets the table that states and cities eat from, and for decades the party that calls itself our greatest ally has held pieces of that table and still left our plate closest to empty.

Here is the question for every town hall and every campaign stop. This party can reach consensus, write the check and defend billions in foreign aid that moves at lightning speed. But a formal, funded reparations program for the community that has delivered it election after election for sixty straight years cannot get a floor vote, let alone a check. That tells you where we actually rank. We are not the priority. We are the guaranteed vote. And guaranteed votes do not get invested in. They get maintained, managed and taken for granted.

Something uncomfortable, but I will say it. You have to respect one thing about the Republicans. They stand on their business. It is evil business, in my opinion. But you know exactly where they stand and never wonder if you are being played. The Democrats will smile in your face, quote Dr. King in an ad, and then negotiate away your community’s future behind closed doors for donor comfort. That is a special kind of betrayal, the kind wrapped in performative solidarity.

I believe this can be the year of the independents. Zohran Mamdani’s rise in New York showed that politics rooted in the actual material needs of everyday people can break through the old machine when it is authentic and unafraid. It does not have to come from either legacy party’s playbook.

So my message is this. Do not vote one way simply because it is what you have always done, or what your parents did out of necessity in a different era. Loyalty without accountability is not loyalty. It is exploitation with better PR.

We are the only community in American politics where a candidate feels the need to say, unprompted, that they are not a politician just for Black people, as if caring about us specifically is a liability to distance from. Nobody says they are not a politician just for white suburban voters. They say it about us, and only us. That is a message. Receive it.

Stop giving away our power for free. Stop mistaking familiarity for loyalty and loyalty for a strategy. Demand specifics. Demand timelines. Demand investment that shows up in our neighborhoods, our schools, our small businesses, our housing, and yes, in reparations. Make every candidate in every party earn what has been handed to them for free for far too long. Ask them directly: what will you do for us? And when they answer, make them stand on it.
